Another season of drought

on April 14, 2015

18-tree-and-river-landscape“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” Jeremiah 17: 7-8

We trust Him, or we don’t. I’m reminded of those sharp, but truthful words from a friend. A conversation we had in the middle of what I thought might be the worst time for my family, financially speaking anyway. I was wrong. This season is more challenging.

The words still rock me to the core. They require I take action. They demand it. There is no room to waiver here.

Life just hasn’t played out the way I thought or hoped. It seems we dug a hole that is harder to recover from than any of us thought it would be. After three years of drought, I found employment. Thankful, yes, absolutely. But, nowhere near where I was before, and that comes with its own set of challenges when your spouse is self-employed. It’s a trade off and I know that this is meant to be. But, just because things are meant to be, it doesn’t mean they will be easy, short-lived or comfortable.

When my friend wrote those words in response to a cry out from me as yet another blow came our way, she was telling me like it is.

Read more of what she wrote to me just recently:

The God we serve is no different today than He was when the money issues were not there. We wrote about Him and told others about Him and His love and power and provision and now He asks us to actually believe it…and our lack of faith is showing. God needs us to be refined and pure for His service and we are woefully equipped. God can make every one of our problems disappear right now if He so chooses … since He has not, there is a sovereign plan and purpose to each situation and we like children throw a tantrum over what He asks us to do for Him.

Wise counsel. Such truth in those words. Truth I needed to hear. Words I’ve continued to pray about and process for days. A reminder that I needed to seek first His will above my own. He has me, us, in this desert for a reason. The faith I profess is being tested and put into action. How will I respond?

My hope and confidence ARE in the Lord. And though another season of drought is upon me, I will not falter as I continue to dig my roots deeper and more firmly into His riverbank.

We may see life change even more dramatically than it has thus far. But one thing is sure. We will not lose faith in our God. Because in all the trials we have faced, He has been there with us, guiding us and giving comfort.

I pray for the strength to keep walking in faith. Because I know when I do, He will give it.

  1. Deb says:

1 Peter 1:6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

Rejoice in the Father’s plan even though we can’t “see” the good – yet…

2 Peter 2:9a …if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials….

Love you my friend…and miss you and our talks in that corner office. You are in my thoughts and prayers!
