The greatest gift of all!

on December 23, 2013

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 NIV

My friend wrote about having a God pocket. Basically, put an amount of money in a pocket (an amount that you and He determine). Keep that with you and pray for Him to give you the person who needs it. I love this idea.

ImageLast Friday, my son and I were shopping and as we were in the checkout lane, the lady in front of us was obviously buying Christmas presents. She was looking through her money and asked about the price of one of the items in her cart. When the clerk told her how much it was, she sadly asked the clerk to put it back. “I can’t afford it,” she said.

I felt a tug in my heart and tears began welling up in my eyes. I opened my wallet and only had the exact amount that her purchase was short in order to buy that item. God whispered, give it to her.

I took the money out of my wallet (money that I had intended to use for my own purchase). Walking up to her, I gently put my hand on her back and whispered to her that I wanted to help. She protested. As I insisted that I wanted her to be able to get that item for whomever it was she was buying it for, we both started crying. She took it, got her item and we hugged. She was a total stranger and we were as close as could be for an instant, because God was in that moment with us. I told her ‘Merry Christmas,” and walked back to my son at our cart. His eyes welled up.

On the way home, we talked about God moments. Those times when you know that only HE could be in charge of the situation. We have had a lot of them, but this one was particularly special.

As we got home and opened the Christmas cards that came in the mail that day, I was in for a surprise God moment myself.

In one of the cards was a check. It was exactly ten times the amount that I had handed the woman at the store just a half hour before.

God’s blessings are all around us. He sees our generosity. He sees our forgiveness. He sees into our hearts and knows our motives. I didn’t give to that woman to get something back. He knew that. But, He doesn’t let generosity, despite circumstances, go unnoticed. This was an unexpected blessing.

I wish you could have seen my son’s face. Sheer marvel.

God’s gifts are all around us, if we pause long enough to see them.

At Christmastime, I pray we all pause long enough to sit in absolute wonder at the greatest gift of all. Jesus in our midst. Jesus, the giver of the ultimate gift. Salvation.

Everything else, no matter how spectacular, pales in comparison and is simply pointing us to Him.

Merry Christmas.
